Who is God? (Part 2 )

Who is God? Friends and peers alike quite often ask out of curiousity about God’s name. Some might undoubtedly say that it is Jesus! Is he?

JESUS CHRIST was baptized at the age of 30 by being immersed in water. When he came up out of the water, a voice from heaven said: “This is my Son, the beloved, whom I have approved.” (Matthew 3:17) On another occasion, Jesus, in prayer to God, said: “Father, glorify your name.” And when Jesus had said that, God’s “voice came out of heaven: ‘I both glorified it and will glorify it again.’”- John 12:28.

From the scripture, It cannot be Jesus for Jesus himself said that: “Father, glorify your name.”(John 12:28) So, who is God? Psalms 18:31 states clearly: “For who is a God besides Jehovah?” 1 Corinthians 1:3 – “May YOU have undeserved kindness and peace from God our Father and [the] Lord Jesus Christ”. From these two scriptures, we can understand that Jesus and God are two different persons and that God has a name that is Jehovah. In fact, it is interesting to note that God’s name, Jehovah (YHWH in Hebrew) can be found 6,962 times in the Hebrew Scriptures (Genesis - Malachi).

Some might claim that it is a sin to use or even to speak of God’s name because it is sacred just as the Jewish people of old after the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 C.E. Actually, after the destruction of Jerusalem, the proper pronunciation of God’s name gradually lost because of the Jewish superstition that it is a sin to pronounce the Divine Name, which of course, was not shared by Jesus, the early Christians or the ancient faithful Hebrews for Jesus himself said,”Father, glorify your name”( John 12:28.) So as Jesus’ followers, would not it be right to also follow him in glorifying God’s name by our using of it daily, whether it be in our prayers or the amazing creatures that we see each day that is created by Him? Wouldn’t that be one way to glorify His name?
